I’d suggest one like this: DJ.MIKE.J.ECLUB.DIET. Neither term appears in MCWP 6-10 but both are more than new-fangled fads and deserve a place on the list.Īs an initial matter, Marines may protest that expanding the list of leadership traits means it’s necessary to craft a new mnemonic. ![]() ![]() So at the risk of dangerous and controversial presumption, I propose adding MINDFULNESS and EMPATHY to the list of leadership traits. While the traits contained in JJ. remain valid today, I believe that the list is incomplete for today’s environment. Every Marine memorizes and recites this acronym. In defining the foundations of leadership, MCWP 6-10 lists 14 leadership traits, frequently known to Marines through the mnemonic “JJDIDTIEBUCKLE”: justice, judgment, dependability, initiative, decisiveness, tact, integrity, enthusiasm, bearing, unselfishness, courage, knowledge, loyalty, endurance. In honor of the legacies of everyone I’ve had the privilege to learn from, and serve in uniform with, I’m offering a reflection and suggestion.Ī foundational text in Marine Corps doctrine is Marine Corps Warfighting Publication (MCWP) 6-10, the current version of the authoritative Leading Marines from 1995. There are too many people to thank here for investing their time and talents in my life over the past two decades-which included three deployments and a host of jobs. 20 years ago today I was commissioned an officer in the Marine Corps.
